GMO Human to Have Bulletproof Skin

A Dutch team created a piece of “bulletproof” skin from special, U.S.-made spider silk and human skin cells and found that it indeed can repel bullets as long as they’re not traveling too fast.

The bulletproof skin showed its superiority over normal human skin by stopping a bullet fired at a reduced speed. But it fell short of surviving a shot at normal speed from a .22 caliber rifle, the benchmark for protection for a Type 1 bulletproof vest.

The result did not discourage Jalila Essaidi, the Dutch artist who, along with the Forensic Genomics Consortium Netherlands, created the skin. She just wanted an art project demonstrating the relative concept of safety.

“Even with the ‘bulletproof’ skin being pierced by the faster bullet, the experiment is, in my view, still a success,” Essaidi said. “The art project is based on and leads to a debate on the question, ‘Which forms of safety are socially important?'”

The special brand of spider silk came from genetically modified goats and worms at Utah State University in Logan. U.S. researchers have spent years harvesting the spider silk protein from the goat milk to try to make new types of super-strong fibers.

Essaidi combined the spider silk with human skin cells from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

Such skin is still a long way from adding practical protection to humans, but it gives a glimpse of what future soldiers or would-be superheroes might expect. After all, the U.S. military and other armed forces have continually sought new ways to bulletproof their warriors on the battlefield, and also have shown interest in discovering the ultimate warrior genes.

For now, anyone can check out the bulletproof skin in Leiden, Netherlands; it’s on display at the National Natural History Museum Naturalis until Jan. 8, 2012.

The project called ‘2.6g 329m/s’ was name after the maximum weight, 2.6 grams, and velocity 329m/s, of a .22 calibre long rifle bullet from which a type 1 bulletproof vest should protect a person.

The team claims that during a firing process, this bullet ‑ with partly reduced speed ‑ went straight through a normal piece of human skin. The ‘bulletproof’ human skin stopped the bullet at the same speed, but didn’t survive a shot with the actual speed after which the project was named.

“By creating this ‘bulletproof’ human skin I want to explore the social, political, ethical and cultural issues surrounding safety,” Essaïdi said in a statement. “With this work I want to show that safety in its broadest sense is a relative concept, and hence the term bulletproof. Even with the ‘bulletproof’-skin being pierced by the faster bullet the experiment is in my view still a success. The art project is based on and leads to a debate on the question ‘Which forms of safety are socially important? And last but not least the project leads to aesthetically very impressing and fascinating results.”

The project has won the team the Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Awards, a prize that seeks to connect art, design and life sciences, the release also noted.

  3. O I don’t know. I read a book a few years ago written by a man who was both an engineer and an MD. The book was a discussion of how to keep a severed head alive-with full brain function. Gives a whole new twist to HEAD of State eh.

    In any case, I tend to see technological development as a sort of human Pre-Cambrian era. Many templates are going to be rolled out over the next 100 years. Only a few of these will be viable. Inevitable that Brave New World will occur.

  4. Wonderful invention, useful for genitically engineered anti terrorist sqad, but by then new generation of bullet capable of piercing this meterial will be invented.
