The world’s worst online oppressors are using an array of tactics, some reflecting astonishing levels of sophistication, others reminiscent of old-school techniques. From China’s high-level malware attacks to Syria’s brute-force imprisonments, this may be only the dawn of online oppression.

In reporting news from the world’s most troubled nations, journalists have made a seismic shift this year in their reliance on the Internet and other digital tools. Blogging, video sharing, text messaging, and live-streaming from cellphones brought images of popular unrest from the central square of Cairo and the main boulevard of Tunis to the rest of the world.

China attacks WordPress.com: ‘Largest and most sustained attack’ in WP history

For two days this month, WordPress.com, which hosts a tenth of the world’s websites drawing nearly 300 million unique visitors a month, suffered the largest distributed denial-of-service attack in its six-year history. Six separate attacks on March 3 and 4, mostly originating from China, targeted a single Chinese-language site hosted by WP.

On March 3rd, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg told TechCrunch (also hosted by WP), “There’s an ongoing DDoS attack that was large enough to impact all three of our datacenters in Chicago, San Antonio, and Dallas.”

Now Mondoweiss reports that Jane Stillwater got booted from DailyKos for making fun of settlements and Jewish Voice for Peace writer Cecilie Surasky writes This isn’t the first time they’ve banned bloggers for writing about Israel and Palestine, but this surely is the dumbest case.”
