UPDATE 1/13/12: Canadian Gov’t: YES, We Dissolved Your Gay Marriage, But We’re Working on a Fix 

Thousands of LGBT couples across the world awoke this morning to learn that they are no longer married.

A Department of Justice lawyer under Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party of Canada government has nullified all same-sex marriages performed in Canada in which the couples’ native country does not permit gays and lesbians to marry.

Prop 8 Unconstitutional — For Now

Judge Vaughn Walker has released his long-awaited opinion on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage: in a nutshell, it’s not. There’s no rational basis for prohibiting same-sex marriage, he ruled, and therefore it violates both the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th amendment of the U.S. constitution. The full opinion is here.

But as we all know, his ruling per se doesn’t matter. It will be appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court shortly, and after that it’s sure to be appealed to the Supreme Court. What’s more, a stay is likely in the meantime. So the question is, how compelling is his opinion? Is it likely to sway members of either the circuit or supreme courts?

MCC Celebrates Marriage Equality in Our Nation’s Capital

On December 15th, the City Council of our nation’s capital announced its passage of legislation guaranteeing marriage equality for the LGBT community.  “It is with exceedingly great joy that I join my voice to the chorus of those celebrating this legislative victory, and the promise of Mayor Adrian Fenty to sign the bill into law,” said The Rev. Nancy Wilson, Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches.

Outspoken Activists Defend Africa’s Sexual Diversity

COPENHAGEN, Aug 5 (IPS) – The second World Outgames, held in the Danish capital, offered up a veritable smorgasbord of sport, politics and arts while celebrating sexual and gender diversity. But it also reminded participants that bigotry against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, sometimes culminating in violence, remains a scourge across the world.

The week-long Outgames, which ended on Aug. 1, attracted 6,500 LGBT athletes and an estimated 20,000 spectators from myriad countries and was characterised by high-level political commitment from the Danish government. The rainbow flag – the international LGBT symbol – adorned the city hall and other buildings surrounding the main square in Copenhagen.

25 copies of Pride seized by Belarus Customs
