Former TSA workers arrested on child pornography charges

The very same U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents that grope and naked body scan you and your children when you fly may also be illegally accessing and sharing child pornography. A recent report by WCVB-TV Boston explains that Andrew Cheever, 33, a former TSA agent from Massachusetts, was recently arrested on child pornography charges — and he is not the only one.

Investigators found that Cheever had been storing and sharing over 10,000 pornographic videos and images involving children on multiple computers, hard drives and external media storage devices. Authorities charged him on two counts of child pornography possession and restricted him from contacting or working at jobs that involve children under the age of 18.

In the middle of its biggest sex abuse scandal yet, A.C. Storr thought the Catholic Church might take a moment on Good Friday to feel for the suffering of its victims. She was wrong.

On Good Friday I went to church. I was raised Catholic, and while the storytelling and fantastical aura of religion suited me well in early childhood, it took a mere 12 years for me to fall out of love with the Church for good. On discovering in Grade 6 that I myself could not be the Pope because I had a dirty vagina, all magic drained out of the Church structure and I saw what I largely still see — a hierarchy that feeds on the vulnerability of the uneducated to maintain an insular kingdom for arrogant men. I didn’t want to be a part of it at 12, and I told my idealist parents that if women can’t lead it, it’s not for me. My mother followed suit a few years later.

So I guess in going to mass on Good Friday I was not what you’d call a neutral observer.

Pope Benedict has accepted the resignation of Bishop John Magee of Cloyne, it was announced today.

Dr Magee stood aside last March over his handling of abuse allegations in his diocese. The announcement was made at 11am in the form of a press release issued through the Irish Bishops’ Conference, St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Co Kildare.

The short statement read: “His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend John Magee, Bishop of Cloyne. This announcement was made today in Rome at 12:00 local time.”
